Palmoplantar Hyperhidrosis, Palmoplantar Hyperhidrosis

Excessive sweating of hands and feet in medical terms is called as palmoplantar hyperhidrosis. ‘Hyperhidrosis’ means excessive sweating, ‘Palmoplantar’ means the hand and feet. So what are the common causes of this in most of the cases? There is no underlying disease, the person is absolutely normal but still he suffers from excessive sweating on the hands and on the feet. This can cause a lot of problem for patients and make them feel socially awkward, make them feel difficult in approaching people and talking to them or performing day to day tasks like writing on a piece of paper.

So excessive sweating on hands and feet - if a cause is found could be related to thyroid problems could be related to obesity that is person being overweight, it could also be related to certain genetic characters that is people in his that person's family also have a lot of sweating on their hands and feet. Other areas which sweat a little more than the rest of the body includes areas like your armpits face and groin areas which sweat a little more than the rest of the body. So how can this condition be treated and is it related to people who have excessive anxiety. Earlier it was thought that people who sweat on their hands and feet suffer from excessive anxiety or that they are nervous type of people but now it has been found that the actual problem or anxiety is because of the disease and it's not because the person is anxious that he is sweating. So this sweating increase in hot weather, it also increases when a person is feeling nervous or a person is feeling tense sweating of the hands and feet can be treated by simple methods like using a device called iontophoresis machine a small current is passed through the hair which blocks the sweat clients and this is done initially weekly three days and later on maintained by monthly ones treatment.

The problem with iontophoresis is patients find that they cannot spend half an hour on every session which is needed for the hands and feet weekly thrice. There is a new treatment called Botox or bottle enum toxin injection bottle nm toxin commonly known as Botox, is injected for wrinkles in cosmetic practice it has also been found at injecting on multiple points on the hand and on the armpits reduces the sweating on the entire body and even to the feet in a certain extent. The drawback with Botox is it is a little expensive and the effect lasts generally for six months but when the Botox procedure is repeated after six months generally the effect tends to last longer that is the second session may last about nine months or even up to one year.

The repeat treatments are necessary until the person stops sweating completely entirely. Other treatments where a person does not want to go for a procedure like iontophoresis or Botox and they find it too expensive, is a simple solution called as aluminium chloral hexahydrate which is found as 10% lotion or a 20% lotion in most of the pharmacies. Aluminum chloral hexahydrate can be applied daily night by the patient and washed off after an hour. If there is no irritation after one week the patient can leave that lotion on the hands and the feet and even the armpits the entire night and after about one week to ten days the patient starts experiencing dryness in the areas once they experience dryness they are asked to reduce the application to alternate days or weekly twice.

This can also be maintained with once a week applications general measures for people who have lot of sweating on hands and feet is to let them use a handkerchief while the person is writing to for wiping his hands or use tissue paper, changing the socks frequently (use cotton socks avoid nylon and synthetic material) and wear loose clothing especially a cotton or linen clothing.

Palmo-plantar hyperhidrosis is a very common condition in which the eccrine (sweat) glands present in our palms and soles secrete sweat abnormally in large quantities. The condition may become a headache for person’s affecting his/her social as well as professional life. Palmoplantar hyperhidrosis which begins in childhood and is known to be frequently run in the patient’s family is called as Idiopathic Palmoplantar hyperhidrosis.
Normal sweating can be controlled primarily by thermoregulation (regulation of body temperature to maintain the core internal temperature) and occurs independently.

Sweating glands are distributed almost all over our entire body surface. The major sweating glands are known as Eccrine glands which are most dense in the palms and soles of a human body. Since this type of hyperhidrosis is stimulated by emotion and stress, it does not occur during sleep.
